We use a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) system to proactively teach and reinforce the behaviors that help all students feel safe, supported, and successful at school. At West Valley, PBIS is built around our STANG expectations—Stay Safe, Team Player, Always Do My Best, Neighborly, and Grit. By clearly defining and teaching these shared expectations, we create a positive, consistent school culture that supports respectful, responsible behavior and allows all students to thrive.
STANG expectations are taught schoolwide and reinforced throughout the year in a variety of ways. Students earn Stang Tickets for demonstrating STANG traits, which can be redeemed at the Stang Store for prizes or special experiences such as Lunch with Mr. Locke or VIP seating at assemblies. We regularly reteach expectations and celebrate students during monthly assemblies, and teachers can recognize outstanding behavior or effort at any time with Stang Strong Awards. When students receive a Stang Strong Award, they select a book from our vending machine with a principal, and families receive a photo and notification through ParentSquare.
Overall, our PBIS system is designed to focus on teaching and celebrating positive behavior rather than reacting to mistakes. By clearly defining expectations, consistently reinforcing them, and recognizing students for doing the right thing, we help create a school environment where students feel valued, motivated, and supported. Our goal is for every student to develop the skills needed to be respectful, responsible, and successful—both in school and beyond.
