What’s a S.T.A.N.G.
So what is a STANG?
We are excited to start a new school year and begin our school-wide STANG plan. Last year a team of teachers attended a fantastic training on PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support). The team came back with some great strategies to incorporate here at Moxee. Positive behavior intervention is a priority at Moxee Elementary School.
What is STANG? Put simply, it is a proactive approach to a school-wide positive behavior plan. This program is meant to reinforce the positive behaviors of students as well as support students who need extra assistance to reach the following school-wide expectations: Stay Safe, be a Team Player, Always Do My Best, be Neighborly, and show Grit.
Why do we need STANG? In the past, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reactive punishment-based strategies including reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions and expulsions. Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student’s educational experience. The purpose of STANG is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. As the main premise of STANG, it is best to take a proactive stance rather than a reactive approach to behavior. Setting aside the time for planned teaching and social –emotional skills will reduce the amount of time spent disciplining student each week.
STANG is a win-win plan that incorporates PBIS strategies that staff members have selected to proactively improve our student’s behavior. Our expectation is that we keep the excitement going throughout the year and impact student achievement through the use of positive behavior supports.
